Tropico 4 - CRASH reports thread

My game continues to freeze up but it won't give me any crash logs. When I first alt+tab, then ctrl+alt+delete to view processes, it shows the game as "running." It doesn't show up as "not responding" until after I click to end process.

Any more ideas? I don't know why there are not crash logs...

Hey guys!

I bought the Tropico 4 Pack with the Expansion and the DLCs from Steam yesterday, but I've run into some nasty crashes... to me, it seems totally random, but mostly, after I click on something (Menu item, building, person... etc). I even reformatted my PC with Windows 7 64-bit, but it's still crashing.

I checked all hints in the first post of this thread.. nothing helped!

I have included the last 4 crash logs... if you need anything else, please let me know!

There is something wrong with your installation, the game cannot recognize some objects. I believe that the expansion haven't been properly installed and somehow corrupted the game data. Try reinstalling everything.

The only common thing between "appdata.dll" and the game's folder "AppData" is the name. The library file "appdata.dll" is a part of the Kalypso launcher interface. Report this error code to Kalypso support, they will give you appropriate instructions what to do.

Hi and thanks for your time, I recently got the Tropico 4 Bundle with all expansions off of steam but have been having some issues. The game has been crashing at varying intervals of time once a map has been entered (anywhere from 2 minutes to 30 minutes). Usually the game just shuts down but it also occasionally bluescreens. Graphics drivers have already been updated and the computer is only 7 months old. I can assure you that my computer meets all minimum requirements. It is also worth mentioning that I can play games such as Diablo 3 and Shogun 2 total war both on medium graphics with no issues.

It has been a couple of weeks and I'm still spending a lot of time after work troubleshooting this issue. My game continues to freeze up. I actually just found a Youtube video showing the crash exactly as it appears on my screen. Due to the unique behavior of the game after the freeze occurs, I'm inclined to believe whatever caused the game to freeze in video is the same issue causing my game to freeze. Please skip ahead in the video to about 8:10. You will witness the game randomly freeze where the payer can still move the camera around freely.

I am also experiencing a similar issue where i can still move my mouse while everything is frozen but I cant scroll to different areas as you can prior to crash.

I can't believe it, but you solved my problem! Thank you so much for this hint... I still don't understand, why a BIOS Update would solve this... but it worked. I've been playing for 3 hours without any crash!

Currently suffering from the Black Screen Of Death and would appreciate any help before I uninstall Tropico 4. Seems like the biggest waste of money in a long time! Shame as I have loved the tropico series.

A similar issues has already been reported. I'm afraid that the freeze is related to the game logic (not to the engine) which enters an endless loop because of some unexpected circumstances (that's only a supposition). The issue shall be investigated, but you can still help by providing a save game captured shortly before the problem occurrence.

Apologies. To clarify. Got black screen of death from another post.

Game crashed randomly during gameplay. Complete black screen. Unable to get away from this screen so assuming pc has crashed. Will be testing in windowed mode to confirm (alt f4 and ctrl+alt+del not working). Have tried various different settings of resolutions, graphical quality etc to see if a can get game to continue without crashing. Seems to take longer to occur on low res games. Any thoughts?

Also, have had a good look for crash dumps but cannot find any. Anything obvious I might be missing?

The issue seems to happen randomly so I'm not sure what a saved game can do to help you solve the issue. I can easily give you a save within 2 minutes of my most recent freeze though. It took me about 30 minutes to find the saved game location but here you go:

Note: Something else I notice which probably is a different issue entirely: When I try to run the game as administrator, the game only makes it to the first black screen with the cursor (unmovable). It freezes before even the Kalypso logo sequence. This isn't an issue for me though because I don't think I need to run it in administrator mode anyway.

Sorry for the delay in uploading this saved game file. Work has had me very busy these past two weeks. Hopefully we can still work toward a solution so I can eventually enjoy the game again. Thank you for the assistance!

Hello everybody.

I hope somebody knows the problem to this. I have the game 100% legal and have also the expansion Modern Times. I have a windows 7 Laptop.

When i'm playing the game just freeze random (without any notice) When it happens i need to close the game with ctrl,alt,del. I don't know why/how this is happening but it's pretty annoying. Because when it crash it deletes also the quicksave of the game so i need to restart the whole level ;_;
Does somebody knows this problem?

I'm having an issue of the game getting stuck after the initial Tropico 4 splash screen, right before the Kalypso splash screen. Just getting a black screen for a good few minutes *it usually starts automatically* Any idea on how to solve this issue?

Shhh and Eiensakura: you are experiencing a silent crash. The problem is found in the provided log - there are a few lines beginning with RenderDevice::Reset. The game's render device cannot be properly initialized at this point which leads to the crash. I'll need some time to investigate it.

The game is amazing and im really excited playing it, but there are a random crash that is destroying my gamming experience =/

The system is randomly crashing, the screen freeze with some green dots(see image) and the music continues for at least 10seg, after 40seg of freeze a blue screen appear fast and the PC reboot.

There are not logs on the game folders, i really don't know what is happen, another games work fine(including BF3 and Map Payne 3 that are heavy) so i belive that a Video Card issue is discarted.

I am really frustrated about having constantly nearly every 2nd save/autosave a crash and activating safe game mode in the next session. It saves the game BUT sometimes all I have done in campaign is LOST! It restarts my campaign (classic) to mission 1 inspite of that I already was in mission 4 (now I already played the 1st mission 4 times Sad )

Tropico 4 Steam Edition with all DLC

I've already deactivated Steam Community and Cloud sync but didn't help. Game isn't fragmented or corrupted (checked with steam) This is the only game I have problems. (Dungeons for example work over steam)

Shhh and Eiensakura: I've located a problem that could be the reason for a crash similar to yours, but I'm still wondering why this problem manifest itself only on your machines. It's caused by a conflict for system resources (will happen on Alt+Tab) or some video driver errors. Try reinstalling the video driver.

thiagomoraesp: I believe that this is a hardware problem, the game cannot crash the whole system (we aren't that good). Please contact Kalypso support for further assistance.

ZAck13: The save file is obviously corrupted and this wont be catch by checking the game installation as it's not a part of it. Try removing the whole folder %appdata%\tropico 4. I'm unable to tell from the log what could cause a crash while saving. I'll send you a further instructions about the dump files.

Svetlio it's strange because other games(heavy games) works fine, maybe there's a problem between trópico and my Nvidia 9800GT.

Tropico used to run smoothly at max settings in 1600x900 until today. For some reason, when I launched the game this morning, the game started in 1024x768 resolution and I had to wait almost a minute for Kalypso/Haemimont splash screen. The game crashes every time I try to change resolution.

This is a quite strange behavior. I haven't installed any new drivers nor software since the last time Tropico was running correctly. I saw, however, that Steam had been downloading some Tropico-related files (perhaps an update?).

Disable the Steam Community In-Game overlay

Thanks, disabling the community overlay allowed me to change the game's setting without a crash. However, it sill takes long to load the Kalypso/Haemimont intros - it used to show them instantly, just after the game was launched, now I have to wait about a minute or more.

Tropico 4 appears to be restarting my computer. When I click the "Play Tropico 4" button, my screen goes black and I wait a few seconds and then my computer reboots.
I am running Windows 7 x64 SP1 with 6 GB of RAM using an Nvidia GTX 285. I uninstalled the 3D Vision driver to no avail. I have looked for logs, but none are produced (neither crash nor game logs). Just to make things even more interesting, the reboot does not happen consistently. Sometimes I am able to play the game fine at max settings. Although after those auto-reboots it sets the settings to lowest due to it crashing. As you might imagine, I'm averse to a lot of experimenting seeing as the symptoms are pretty severe. I can't imagine that it would be overheating as this happens as soon as I run the game. I have not seen this symptom in any other games before.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to the cause of this issue?

thiagomoraesp: there is something wrong with the installation, in the log there are reports about missing assets. Try reinsalling the game. But I repeat - the game cannot cause the described system failures. Usually such problems are caused by hardware malfunction.
CrazyRubes: same goes for you buddy, the game cannot cause a system restart. I'm unable to tell what could be the reason.
